  • Vision

    Supporting Students with Unique Needs

In 1982, The Quaker School at Horsham was founded to help students with different learning needs find the right path forward to fulfilling their full potential. Originally described as the “Pipe Dreams School,” The Quaker School opened with just three students and two teachers in the basement of the Horsham Monthly Meeting House, a structure that dates to the 1600s.

The school is now serving over 90 students with ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, expressive and receptive language, and anxiety disorders from grades K-12, including a post graduate program.

  • Designing for Future Success

Collaborating to Create an Inspiring New Building

In 1996, the school started working with Blackney Hayes to design a new building for its growing population, with spaces supportive of the needs of the student.

  • Creating welcoming learning spaces

An Engaging Addition to Enhance Learning Environments

The building, documented as a three phase plan, was designed to complement the architecture of the Meeting House. To make that new building feel less institutional and more approachable, Blackney Hayes broke it down into a series of more human-centered classroom pods.

In 2020 the second phase of the school was completed to house the Upper School, and in 2024 Blackney Hayes completed the design of the third phase for the school’s Sassafras program, a highly structured program for students whose autism is more challenging than the school’s general population.

  • “Throughout our work with The Quaker School, we’ve tried to design spaces that can reflect the Quaker notion of Inner Light. This is a place where children are continually reminded that they belong.”
