Federal Street Housing, a project completed for Universal Companies around 16th and Federal Streets in South Philadelphia, combined the renovation and rehabilitation of 21 existing three-story brick structures with the new construction of 15 units for single family occupancy. Extensive renovation work was required due to the severely deteriorated condition of some of the existing buildings; yet any remaining architectural features were carefully restored or replicated to their original glory. New construction was sensitively designed to blend in with the existing architecture of the neighborhood – generally flat roofed, modest rowhouses – with materials chosen for compatibility with the existing fabric.
