Lafayette College offers traditional degrees in mechanical, electrical, chemical and civil engineering, while cultivating an environment of multidisciplinary collaboration. The renovation of and addition to the Acopian Engineering Center has been a catalyst for collaborative work through the creative reconfiguration and modernization of existing space and the strategic insertion of flexible classrooms.
Following a comprehensive master planning process, Blackney Hayes and Lafayette’s Division of Engineering streamlined the project using guiding principles for renovation targets and distinct opportunities for fundraising efforts. The result is enhanced natural light, upgraded offices, classrooms and lab spaces for each engineering discipline, and the insertion of a new, 4,000-SF fifth floor.
Enclosed in bird-safe glazing, the ultra-modern overbuild includes three high-tech classrooms and a collaboration center with custom-designed butcher block tables, writable walls and LED lighting. It houses the groundbreaking Integrative Engineering program that combines bioengineering, environment & energy, and robotics.
