The Board of Trustees of Williamson College of the Trades has selected Blackney Hayes principal Kevin R. Blackney, AIA as the 2018 recipient of its distinguished I.V. Williamson Award. The I.V. Williamson Award is given annually to a member of the Williamson community whose life and work exemplify the ideals of Williamson’s founder, 19th century businessman and philanthropist Isaiah Vansant Williamson. Presented since 1955, past I.V. Williamson Award recipients include Richard G. Clemens, Henry Rowan, H.F. “Gerry” and Marguerite Lenfest, and John Wanamaker.
Kevin Blackney accepted the award on February 8th during a Founder’s Day ceremony in the Clara Schrenk Memorial Chapel on Williamson’s Campus in Media. The award was presented by William J. Bonenberger, Chair of Williamson’s Board of Trustees and a past I.V. Williamson Award recipient, who remarked that Mr. Blackney was selected in recognition and appreciation of the hundreds of volunteer hours he has spent designing new and updated facilities on Williamson’s campus. Projects Mr. Blackney has designed at Williamson include Watson Dormitory, the Strine Learning Center, new campus signage, and the current campus master plan. Mr. Blackney also designed renovations to Williamson’s Eyre Dormitory and student dining facility, both originally designed by renowned Philadelphia architect Frank Furness.
A Williamson alumnus himself, Kevin studied carpentry at Williamson and graduated with the class of 76. He went on to earn an Architecture degree from Drexel University, and co-founded Blackney Hayes Architects in 1988. Mr. Blackney is a licensed architect in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia and holds a Certificate in Public School Planning and Design from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Cornerstone Christian Academy in West Philadelphia and as a member of Williamson’s Architectural Review and Cost Analysis Committee. Originally from Claymont, Delaware, Mr. Blackney and his wife Barbara have lived in Radnor Township, Delaware County for 21 years. They are the parents of three adult daughters.
