September 1, 2023 – In continuing efforts to enhance the student experience, Saint Joseph’s University commissioned Blackney Hayes Architects to design and document a new 240,000 square-foot Residence Hall. Located on the Hawk Hill Campus along City Ave, the building will house over 500 first-year students starting in the fall of 2025.
The new residence hall symbolizes modernity, sustainability, and an elevated campus experience. The positioning of the hall offers a serene view of the landscape in front of the Maguire-Wolfington Welcome Center, creating a small quad for students to enjoy out their back door. It features two covered archways, linking the residence hall to the Campion quad and the rest of the campus beyond.
Designed with sustainability in mind, the building targets LEED Silver Certification. It features a geothermal well field, efficient mechanical systems, and sustainable lighting to minimize environmental impact. While it incorporates modern energy conservation strategies, the exterior appearance continues the familiar stone masonry language of the collegiate gothic architecture on SJU’s campus.
The project is scheduled to be completed in Spring of 2025, with a Building “Topping-Off” in Spring of 2024. The building will open to students in Fall of 2025. For more information about SJU’s Master Plan, visit the SJU website.
