  • Revitalizing a Historic Carriage House

Restoring Charm and Functionality with Modern Renovations

In an aging carriage house on a historic street in Philadelphia, Blackney Hayes designed an ambitious renovation to breathe new life into a historic structure.

  • Honoring Heritage Through Thoughtful Design

Preserving Original Features while Enhancing Light and Space

The design vision came from the building’s roots, reinforcing its many inherent cues – from old wood ceilings to large windows and ample open space. The second floor living space includes a central kitchen with the living and dining spaces on either end. The third floor addition, which includes the primary bedroom, bathroom and an outdoor patio, mimics its neighboring historic structures by using a mansard roof and industrial windows. And throughout, the rooms are open, spacious, and flooded with natural light.

  • A Distinctive Philadelphia Design

Merging Modern Design with Original Character

“Our goal with this design,” explains Principal John Hayes “was to juxtapose modern additions with the structure’s historic fabric. The result is something that feels distinctively Philadelphian.”
