    Expanding Independence Charter School

In a tightly congested section of Center City, Independence Charter School knew it needed to create enough space for a gymnasium and cafeteria and relocate the playground that would be replaced by an addition to the school.

  • Expanding Spaces for Growth

    A Modern Cafeteria Enhances Connection

In response, Blackney Hayes designed a 25,000 square foot addition with a construction budget of $8.7M. Located on the ground floor, a new cafeteria contains a full service kitchen, and ample space for a myriad of seating arrangements. The school’s previous cafeteria was reshaped into additional learning studios.

  • Spaces for Play

Elevating Spaces with Light and Skyline Views

The gymnasium provides a light-filled exercise and play space. And a rooftop playground provides the students with an outdoor respite that overlooks the city skyline.
